Part of the Oriel application form for this specialty includes a series of self assessment questions.

You'll need to provide clear evidence to justify your answers.

Important: Important

Due to changes to the curriculum, 2026 will be the final year that recruitment to the ST4 Paediatric Dentistry training programme will run. All ST1 Paediatric Dentistry trainees will now be recruited to a four-year run-through programme.

Please note there is a separate self assessment form if you're applying to Paediatric Dentistry ST1.

The self assessment questions

There are a number of multiple-choice self assessment questions built into the application form. For these questions, you need to select the most appropriate response from a drop-down list.

The self assessment questions, the list of responses and details of suitable evidence can be found in the next section on this page.

Your responses to these self assessment questions will determine your own score. You will need to provide evidence to substantiate your responses via the portal; this evidence will be validated by a panel and used to derive your final validated score.

Any lack of evidence, or lack of clarity provided by applicants will lead to an amendment of the score. It is the responsibility of the candidate to provide clear and unambiguous evidence for the process.

The recruitment office is not able to advise you about which response you should select for any question. You must select the response you feel you will be able to justify to the verification panel, using the evidence you provide.

Information:

For more information visit the Dental specialty training shortlisting page.

If it's discovered that any self assessment response you provide is false or misleading or if you provide evidence containing Patient Identifiable Data, you may be referred to a Probity Panel.

We reserve the right to use anti-plagiarism software.

Submitting your self assessment

We'll be using a separate system for collating and verifying the self assessment evidence. Further details on how and where to upload your evidence will be provided to applicants after longlisting has been completed.

Your uploaded documents will then be validated against your self assessment score by a panel of clinicians. After validation has been completed applicants will be provided with feedback detailing any amended scores.

Appealing your score

If you wish to appeal your validated self assessment score, you'll then have a 72-hour window to do so.

Please note, as part of this appeal applicants will not be able to upload any additional documents. The appeal will then be reviewed by the appeals panel and the score awarded by them will be final.

Your self assessment evidence

The verification panel will only be able to assess the evidence you provide. They will not contact you to request additional evidence.

This means you should provide all evidence in a clear format so it's easy to identify and assess. Any evidence not clearly presented will be rejected.

2026 Paediatric Dentistry ST4 national self assessment form

A ‘self-assessment’ topic has been added to the FAQ section on Oriel to assist you in completing this form.

Listed below are the self-assessment (SA) questions and responses that appear on the application form. Your responses to these questions will determine your score. You will need to support your responses by uploading evidence to the relevant system. The Dental Trainee Recruitment website will give you details of the system and the evidence required. The lead recruiter for the specialty you are applying to will inform you of the timelines for submitting evidence.

Your evidence will be validated by a panel and used to derive your final validated score.

Evidence of false or misleading responses will be collected, and you may be referred to a Probity Panel.

We reserve the right to use anti-plagiarism software.

Lack of evidence or unclear evidence will affect your score and may lead to your application being rejected entirely. It is the responsibility of the candidate to provide clear and unambiguous evidence.

Please submit a separate PDF document for each of the questions. Each PDF document must be a single document that includes all relevant pieces of evidence. If more than one PDF document is uploaded per question, only the first will be assessed.

You should include all evidence relevant to each question in the PDF. If a piece of evidence supports more than one question, you may need to include it multiple times, adding it to the pdf for each relevant question.

Please ensure that documents not in English are officially translated or they will not be scored. The translator should sign and date their translation and provide their contact details.

For several of the questions, you will need to provide evidence of LTFT (Less Than Full Time) employment, if relevant to you. This evidence can be the same but needs to be uploaded for each question, e.g. timetable or job plan.

The panel will only be able to assess the evidence you provide via the system. They will not contact you to request additional evidence or access to any information you have entered on Oriel. You must therefore provide all evidence in a clear format so it can be easily identified and assessed.

The recruitment office cannot advise you on your responses. You must select the response you feel you will be able to justify to the panel, using the evidence you provide.

No evidence can be submitted retrospectively.

Evidence should not contain patient identifiable data.

Please do not password protect any of your evidence.

Throughout the form, the following asterisks are used to denote:

*All time periods stated refer to Whole Time Equivalent (WTE) of employment excluding any periods of statutory leave. Any periods of statutory leave should be evidenced and uploaded to the relevant questions.
