Following last week's British Medical Association (BMA) and BDA (British Dental Association) announcement that junior doctors and hospital dental trainees will take part in industrial action from Monday 13 March 2023 (from 07:00 hrs) to Thursday 16 March 2023 (ending at 06:59 hrs), discussions have been taking place to determine how medical and dental specialty recruitment should be managed during this time to minimise the impact to applicants and to allow interviewers to remain in their place of work to deliver clinical service.

We can today confirm that the following plans have been put in place.

  • There will be no interviews held for posts in England on 13, 14, 15 or 16 March. Interviews will resume on Friday 17 March.
  • Interviews for dental specialties that are directly impacted by the industrial action will be rearranged.

Recruitment teams will aim to limit deadlines and communications being sent to applicants during the period of industrial action. However, as interviews will recommence on Friday 17 March 2023, there may be some crucial, interview specific information that needs to be sent to those that have an interview planned shortly after the period of industrial action ends. All communications will be sent as a minimum through Oriel so applicants should ensure they check their Oriel account regularly.

The Medical and Dental Recruitment and Selection (MDRS) team are currently working with lead recruiters for the specialties impacted to develop contingency plans on how recruitment will be delivered during this period. We will publish the plans as soon as they are approved and expect this to be no later than Monday 6 March 2023.

We appreciate this might be a worrying time for applicants impacted by the industrial action so please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected] if you have any  questions or concerns.
